No, no. Have you heard of the bicycle? [ get ready for talking with one hand like a pro. ] Allora, they are modern machines — like a carriage, I guess. But it is much smaller, and it only has two wheels. If horses were useless metal... That would be the bicycle. I was told it is very easy to learn, but it took me all day! I don't know how many times I fell. I want. A horse.
Niccolo. [Her voice is a little dry and husky, but largely intact.] I have managed to get some writeups together on the Loki and Hel districts, along with a small portion of Heimdall. How would you like this to be delivered?
Molto bene. I am in the welcome house, if you would like to meet there.
[ if he notices the state of her voice, he makes no mention of it. the last few days have been tiring in ways he wishes they weren't, so he doesn't exactly sound his best either. ]
[After a short note to let him know she's on her way, she makes her way to the welcome hall. It isn't a terribly long wait before she arrives. There are three separate rolled documents in her arms, and she has a nasty looking shiner on her face, along with what looks like a broken nose. She's gotten some healing, but only the minimum. She'll go back to finish the job tonight, but for now she wants to feel the reminders.]
Nicollo. I hope you haven't waited too long for these. Did you want to have a look at them and go over the sorts of things I've noticed?
[ it's not entirely a lie. machiavelli is willing to wait for good and accurate information. that it's coming from a woman like samantha just means he expects his patience to pay off considerably. the shiner, and her earlier actions on the network, don't go unnoticed. only without comment.
niccolò gestures to a table at the side of the hall. ]
[She's more than happy to pretend that day didn't happen for today. If he wants an explanation sometime, he can get it in detail, but for the moment, she takes a look at the edges of the tubes before unrolling one. It is a detailed map of Loki District. The lines are as they were originally in the map previously etched out.
Several points have specific lines indicating differences in alley and road sructures, using a red ink to display the differences. There is an overlay of lines that move between a series of structures, all of them in blue with symbols and notations for each. A set of small symbols are added to several alleyways.]
The red will show you the changes from what I saw on the map. As you can see, the original maps we have are very accurate in terms of the basics. There's been some changes, but I get the impression from those I've checked with that these are because of the recent floods and similar events. For the most part the streets themselves are up to date.
[She sets out a key, containing both blue text and black text notations on her short-hand. Most of the notations on the alleyways and roadways indicate either locations of boltholes, hiding points, one-person width alleyways, dead-ends and other sorts of details that would matter more for a street urchin than tactical combat.
Loki District is notably full of a lot of boltholes and very small, cramped dead end alleys, compared to other districts.]
[ considering the kind of training he expects to be dealing with among the other travelers, and what he's seen among the natives so far, the tactics of a street urchin may be just as valuable as that of an entire regiment of troops. possibly even more so, once things get chaotic.
machiavelli studies it for a long moment, one hand behind his back while the other hovers over the paper as he traces out idle paths. ]
If the other maps are to be as detailed as this, then you have done much better work than I expected.
[She rolled out the other two maps. Heimdall was definitely a work in progress. However, she seemed to be following through with the same pattern for each of them.]
I intend, over the next weeks to finish this same map for everything. I expect Baldr will be more tricky due to the park's size. The carnival in Hel was complicated enough as it stood.
Regardless, the pattern of magical locations seems to be somewhat consistent. [She indicated the blue lines and connections.] There's very little active, but it seems like they were meant to channel power within the city... or at least whatever exists, towards the main houses and the castle, with connecting points along the way. Most of those had some sort of research location or a shop of special nature that I saw.
[ a nod, and he makes note of what he recognizes from his own time in the city against what he can see marked on the maps before him. ]
These magical locations... [ he turns his attention to samantha, directly now instead of as an aside to the maps. magic isn't his forte, but he can assume certain things about how it might work based on what he's seen in asgard so far. ] How do you believe they might be used? Or, perhaps do you think they are inactive in relation to this sickness among the people?
